چکیده

SMMSS, K. Calcium and carbonate metabolism in the frcg (Rana temporia) during respiratory acidosis. Am. J. Physiol. 2 14(3) : 627634. 1968.-Frogs (R. temporaria) contain large deposits of calcium carbonate in the endolymphatic sacs of the inner ear. Methods are described for determining the quantities of calcium and phosphate lost from frogs made acidotic with carbon dioxide (5-200/o in oxygen) and for determining the increase in base excess of the blood. The results suggest that acidosis causes a fall in the carbonate level of the blood and that the mineral deposits dissolve until the bicarbonate and pH levels of the blood are sufficient to restore the carbonate concentration back to its original value. This is taken to indicate that the blood is normally saturated with calcium carbonate and in equilibrium with the deposits in the endolymphatic sacs.

Physiological Responses to Air Exposure: Acid-Base Balance and the Role of Branchial Water Stores

SYNOPSIS. Intertidal organisms usually exhibit one of two behaviors when they are air exposed. They either isolate themselves from the aerial environment or they interact with the aerial environment. Among the animals using the first behavior, body fluid acid-base balance is partially maintained by dissolution of the calcium carbonate shell in the bivalve molluscs to buffer the metabolic acids ...

Acid Tolerance and Effects of Sublethal Acid Exposure on Iono-regulation and Acid-base Status in Two Crayfish Procambarus Clarki and Orconectes Rusticus

Acid-toxicity tests were performed using two crayfish species, Procambarus clarki Girard and Orconectes rusticus Girard to determine the median lethal pH (LC60) after 4 days exposure to acid. Four-day LC50 values of pH 2*5-2-8 were observed, indicating that these animals are more acid-tolerant than most fish species. Haemolymph acid-base variables and major ion concentrations were measured duri...

Acute effect of citrate bath on postdialysis alkalaemia.

INTRODUCTION The correction of metabolic acidosis caused by renal failure is achieved by adding bicarbonate during dialysis. In order to avoid the precipitation of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate that takes place in the dialysis fluid (DF) when adding bicarbonate, it is necessary to add an acid, usually acetate, which is not free of side effects. Thus, citrate appears as an advantageo...

EHects of dietary sodium bicarbonate on egg production and egg quality of laying hens during high summer temperature

Eggshell quality is one of the most common problems in layer stocks. Results from the field have shown that the incidence of cracked eggs in layer stocks ranges from 1-2% to 30-35% (ALTAN and ALTAN, 1992). This problem is more specific in older flocks when the birds were raised under high environmental temperatures. The eggshell consists of 98% calcium carbonate. The necessary Ca for shell form...
